5 Reasons to Choose Metal-Framed Doors Over Wood-Framed

Posted on

The type of doors you choose for your property can have a big impact, but many people think only of the door and forget about the frame that supports it. Wood is commonly used for frames, but metal-framed doors offer several benefits covering everything from security to aesthetics. With that in mind, here are just five reasons to consider choosing metal-framed doors over wood-framed doors.

1. More Robust

Wood frames are relatively strong, but they can't match the strength of metal. Since metal frames are so robust, they aren't going to be easily damaged by any bumps or bashes. Security is also excellent since metal frames make doors much harder to break through, and you won't even have to worry about events like heavy storms or earthquakes damaging your doors. Additionally, the strength of metal frames helps prevent tilting or twisting as a property settles.

2. Bears More Weight

Since metal frames are stronger than wood frames, they can be made thinner and weigh less. This is ideal when you want larger doors since traditional wood frames would probably need to be larger than you'd like. When you opt for metal, your door frames are far less obtrusive even when required for larger entrances. As such, metal should be particularly attractive to those who prefer minimalist styling.

3. Smooth Operation

Even the best wood-framed doors will be slightly susceptible to warping, which isn't a problem with metal-framed doors. Additionally, surfaces are typically smoother on metal-framed doors. This means the working mechanisms should operate more quietly and easily on metal-framed doors.

4. Minimal Maintenance

Wood-framed doors won't require a huge amount of maintenance, but they still require a little more TLC than metal frames. While wood frames will occasionally need to be repainted and resealed or revarnished to keep them looking their best and prevent deterioration, metal frames normally come powder-coated to stay in like-new condition for years to come. All they'll need is an occasional wipe-down to get rid of dust.

5. Unaffected by Moisture

Finally, it's well worth remembering that wood frames can be affected by moisture. Exposure to excessive moisture can lead to swelling and rotting, but even small changes can prove problematic. Door frames can warp slightly as moisture levels fluctuate, so more dry environments can pose problems. Metal doors do not absorb moisture, and most will either be naturally resistant to corrosion or treated to resist it.
